Move First, Think Later: A Physical Theatre Workshop for Improvisers

  • UHeights Room 104 5031 University Way Northeast Seattle, WA, 98105 United States (map)

Break free from the pressure to come up with a clever opening line. In this intensive workshop, improvisers will lead with their bodies, not their brains, and discover how bold physical choices can unlock more dynamic scene work.

This workshop trains you to offer fearless physical initiations that give your scene partners something concrete and surprising to build on. Instead of walking onstage with a clever premise, you'll discover how a committed gesture, an unusual rhythm, or an unexpected use of space can generate more interesting and honest scene work than a predetermined idea.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Discover how to make bold physical choices onstage to create memorable characters that move differently than you do

  • Gain spatial awareness of your body in relationship to other performers and the stage

  • Learn about a framework for analyzing and embodying different movement qualities
Build your confidence in making strong physical offers that launch scenes

Perfect for improvisers who feel stuck in their heads, feel like they talk too much, or want to break patterns of playing it safe.

We recommend that before taking this workshop, you either:

  • Attend at least 3 Improv for Real Life workshops

  • Complete the Grown Up Drama Club class series

  • Have some prior acting/improv experience. (If you’ve never taken an Improv for Real Life class, please email irlimprov@gmail.com with a brief overview of your prior experience.)

GOOD TO KNOW: Open to ages 18+ | We recommend that you bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes and clothes you can move in.
