TIPS for Teen is BACK in 2021 with a new format which will allow teens to learn, grow and connect even more than previously! The TIPS session will now be spread out over two weeks, where the first week will entail an interesting conversation with a guest speaker. Then, the following week, participants will continue the discussion among themselves (without a speaker), writing and sharing their TIPS letters as a tool to explore the topic more.
For this week, we will be having an conversation with Uma Rao on abolition on March 9th, 2021. The follow up session for this conversation will be on March 16th, 2021.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Uma Rao is the founder of Devi Consults, a boutique nonprofit consulting firm. She has worked in the nonprofit sector for 20 years, and her approach to her work is grounded in her feminist, intersectional lens. In 2018, Uma had the honor of directing the nation’s first full queer and trans inclusive cast from the South Asian community in Tasveer’s Yoni Ki Baat (adaptation of Vagina Monologues). She currently serves as the board president for Surge Reproductive Justice. Outside of consulting and serving community, some of Uma’s favorite things to do include obsessing over her dog, finding the best french fries, and playing out her rock star fantasies through karaoke.
ABOUT THE TOPIC:
Using TIPS to Understand Abolition: Uma have been starting to develop her understanding of abolition, and how it can save our world and our people. She would love to keep learning with all of us and use the TIPS method to explore this
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:
Our facilitator for TIPS for Teens is Anika Tara Rao. Anika is currently in 10th grade. She enjoys singing, cooking, travelling and laughing with friends and family. Anika was inspired by her mom Dr. Anu Taranath to create safe spaces for talking about sometimes uncomfortable topics. She loves leadership and is very excited and thankful to be able to connect with you all!
ABOUT TIPS:
TIPS is a book written by Dr. Anu's UW students during their study abroad program in India, encouraging us to see ourselves and our surroundings anew via thought-provoking letters to Things, Ideas, People and Self (TIPS).
