About the Event

Please RSVP to get the Zoom link emailed to you.

UHeights is hosting a Zoom meeting in order to continue our Thursdays at 10 meetings via video chat! Discussion Group will be meeting on the second Thursday of the month. Join us!

As part of our Black History month celebrations, we welcome guest speaker Dennis Flannigan who will be talking with us about his experiences with the Freedom Summer project. At age 23, Dennis went to Mississippi to work for the Freedom Summer project led by Robert Moses designed to do voter registration for Blacks in Mississippi. His breakthrough moment came when at the age of 13, he was nervous about accepting the offer of  a tuna fish sandwich from an African American woman. His time in the South was the catalyst for a life of service for Dennis, through creating and leading nonprofits and in holding public office through his time on the Pierce County Council in Tacoma and in the Washington State legislature for 8 years:

1964-65L SNCC  ( Student non- violent co- ordinating committee) worker in Shaw, MS (Delta)

Founded or co-founder of Safe Streets, Asian Day, Tacoma Area Council on Giftedness, Pierce County Reading Foundation; Pierce County Dispute Resolution Center; chaired Governor’s Council on Substance Abuse under two governors; active member of many boards and commissions, and recent volunteer with the Tacoma Urban League.

We are also excited to have guest speaker Herman Hutchinson, a retired educator, born in Mississippi on his grandfather’s tenant farm.  Herman is a beloved member of our Memoir Group and he has been writing his memoir and will share some of his experiences with us.
