About our Speaker:
For our December Discussion Group, we will welcome guest speaker, Catherine Hinrichsen (HYNE-rick-sen). Catherine is a veteran communications professional and educator. Most recently, she led Seattle University's Project on Family Homelessness for 10 years. This was a communications and advocacy program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. They used innovative strategies in journalism, arts, and storytelling to engage the community in solving family homelessness. Some of their work included the award-winning Journalism Fellowships on Family Homelessness, and storytelling collaborations with the acclaimed nonprofits StoryCorps and The Moth.
The project also served as a pro bono communications firm, building capacity and collaboration among nonprofit partners to stimulate action and policy change. Catherine recruited and supervised the team of Seattle U students each year who created content for partners, and planned and implemented community engagement events. With partners, Catherine has presented a popular workshop on Data Storytelling at national and regional conferences since 2016.
Catherine's community service includes leading the communications efforts as a board member of the Third Door Coalition, a cross-sector civic alliance working to solve chronic homelessness in King County, Washington. Next week she will start a new position doing communications at the Washington State Department of Health, and will teach a class on Public Relations and Society at UW in the winter quarter.
