UHeights is hosting a Zoom meeting in order to continue our Thursdays at 10 meetings via video chat! 

Discussion Group will be meeting on May 14th, the second Thursday of the month. Join us!

Our speaker this month is Beryl Cheal. Beryl's background is in education and specifically in early childhood education.  She spent time in the Gaza Strip with the American Friends Service Committee setting up preschools in the 1980s after heading up Head Start programs here in Washington.  Her work in Gaza instilled a love of the Middle Eastern peoples and culture. 

In this meeting, Beryl will include information that links back to our last month's speaker Andy Smallman's presentation  regarding compassion and kindness in a curriculum that she developed for use in teaching Syrian refugee children and teen women. She will also review the Syrian conflict and the refugee camps that sprang up in Jordan and how the need for child education programs for the children have come about, and discuss her own role in helping to set up the education programs.
