UHeights is hosting a Zoom meeting in order to continue our Thursdays at 10 meetings via video chat! Conversations will be meeting on the second Thursday of the month. Join us!

Topic for May:

May is Mental Health Awareness month, and we will have a conversation about mental health with guest speaker, Seoirse Pierce. Seoirse will be covering basic signs of poor mental health, how to care for your mental health, and signs that mean you need to visit a doctor. Various forms of treatment, such as medication, therapies, and accommodations, will be discussed. There will also be a brief section debunking common misconceptions about mental health.

About the Speaker:

Seoirse was born in Kitsap County, WA, and has been dealing with complex mental health issues that began to be identified at the age of 6. His hereditary issues were compounded by inaccessible treatment and slow identification, as well as underuse or ignoring of his accommodations by educators. Several of his issues are currently undefined or defined by symptoms rather than a known underlying condition because symptoms overlap for many conditions. The current positively identified mental health conditions are bipolar disorder, and cPTSD, also known as complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

Seoirse is a member of several private groups that support mental health in a peer-to-peer setting. He spends a considerable amount of his free time advising and assisting mentally ill people who are coming to terms with being mentally ill, assisting them with development of coping skills and accessing resources for treatment and diagnosis while avoiding medical abuse. Many of these people are youth, but older people figuring out that they have depression or schizophrenia through mental health education is common.

These experiences have made Seoirse a strong advocate for improved mental health services, particularly for those living in poverty. He has also developed strong opposition to the idea that mental health can be treated either purely by doctors or purely through environmental changes, instead viewing it as something that requires both treatment and accommodation. He holds the firm opinion that mental health is a major societal health crisis, and that it is widely underestimated how many people struggle with mental health issues because many people do not know how to identify a possible mental health issue.
