About the Event
Join UHeights Theatre Alliance member, Filament: A Collab Lab on the last Sunday of the month from 4-6pm, for Sensory Singing, a monthly exploration of music and sensation.
About Shape Note Singing:
Shape Note Singings have been a part of rural American life for over two centuries, but in recent years have taken root in secular cosmopolitan communities as a type of communion. The power of coming together for the express purpose of singing in a non-performative mode has become its own practice; still tied to tradition, but wholly new.
This monthly meet-up aims to take that transformation a step further by using the format of a Shape Note Singing as a foundation for sensory exploration. A classic Singing would include ritual focus, food, and celebrations of births and deaths. This would all be supported by the immersive, bone-tingling experience of singing inside the hollow square. The Sensory Singing will concentrate on where all those elements coincide for us as sensation, emotional, physical, and the space between.
About the Instructor:
Nathan Brockett (he/him) is a founding member of the laboratory theatre filament: a collab lab. For the past few years, he has been developing a sensory approach to making theatre. In 2020, he was part of the inaugural International Sensory Lab hosted and curated by Oily Cart Theatre, UK. Since then, he has been developing a series of Sensory Workshops which took place throughout 2022. The Sensory Singing is in part a continuation of this work, as well as an outlet for community to come together and sing for its own sake.
