Seattle Modern Opera Company presents: Romance in America (Friday Show)

Romance in America portrays the nature of many monogamous, hetero-normative relationships. It takes a look at the relationships that have formed our current ideas of romance, whether they are healthy or not.

This is a show of three one-act operas.

Again, music by Jake Heggie and libretto by David Patrick Stearns , looks at the iconic duo of Lucy and Ricky from the beloved show, I Love Lucy. We get a behind the scenes look as to why Lucy considers leaving Ricky, because of his misogynistic views on comedy and abuse.

A Hand of Bridge, music by Samuel Barber and libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti, is about two couples playing Bridge together. They do this every week, and they always seem to think about everything other than the game.

The Telephone by Gian Carlo Menotti is a hilarious opera about a man trying to propose to his girlfriend, but she won’t stop talking on the phone. First performed in 1947, SMOC’s new adaptation is set in 2007, when the first iPhone was released to the public.

Romance in America is about one hour long, not including intermission.
