About the Event
About the workshop: This monthly drop-in series will provide a safe, confidential space to discuss and reflect on various issues impacting our communities, as well as explore tools for self and communal healing. Please note that this space will prioritize and center the voices and experiences of BIPOC women and gender-expansive individuals; as such, we lovingly ask that you carefully consider whether this space is for you. This month, we will focus on foundational principles of healing justice and their relevance to our community. This will also be a space to generally unpack the trauma many of us have sustained over the last 2 years due to COVID-19, racial and gender-based violence, etc. We will also engage in group reflection and meditation to begin the healing process.
About the Instructor:
Josie Cooke (she/they) was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest on the ancestral land of the Duwamish, otherwise known as Seattle. Josie received her B.A. in psychology and neuroscience in 2015 at Queens College, CUNY, before moving to London on a Marshall scholarship to pursue graduate school. They are currently finishing an MPhil in clinical neuroscience while working as a physical therapy aide. In the next few years, she plans to apply to Doctor of Physical Therapy programs with the goal of one day opening her own holistic physical therapy practice. Josie is also an aspiring herbalist, a dancer, and a board member for UHeights.
Josie started regularly attending Malikah healing justice circles in August 2020 and fell in love with the people, the space, the energy, and the conversation each circle holds. Early in 2021, they attended Gender Justice Institute and trained to become a Malikah Chapter Lead. Josie is very excited to be bringing the healing magic of Malikah to UHeights and is looking forward to facilitating monthly healing justice circles on a wide variety of topics!
About Malikah:
Malikah is a collective of trauma-informed trainers and facilitators, originally founded in 2010 by Rana Abdelhamid. The organization aims to equip women and gender-expansive people of color globally with tools in self-defense, financial literacy, organizing, and healing justice. Malikah’s healing justice circles focus on recognizing how violence and trauma impact our bodies and our communities, and the knowledge that it takes intentional healing, unlearning, and relearning to be able to navigate a systemically oppressive world. This space centers inclusivity, collective care, purposefully embracing humanity, imagining, acting, and transforming.
